Posture – Use Yours to Succeed

What does your Posture communicate

Did you know how much people assume about you when they see your posture? It’s scary! Posture – use yours to succeed

When I was driving to work last week, I passed someone walking along the highway. The person’s back was to me and he or she had a hooded jacket on, so I really didn’t see a face. But I could discern quite a bit anyway. I assumed he/she was old, because the posture was stooped over. The walk was slow and the gait was halting – possibly sick? Feeble?

As I passed, I turned to confirm my supposition. It was a young woman, maybe a teenager!

Posture is an important non-verbal clue that we use to judge people by. It’s one of the first things we notice about another person, even if just subliminally. My lesson that day was to be careful of my impressions, but there is another lesson that might be beneficial to that young woman, or to you:

  • Stand/sit up straight when you want to appear capable.
  • Move with some energy to convey your willingness to get-up-and-go.
  • Good posture makes a person seem confident – use it especially if you’re not confident!
  • Use proper posture to make you look thinner, and younger.
  • The frame of your posture communicates your emotional frame of mind.

Body language is an important communication tool. Start with the most basic body language, your posture, to communicate that you are successful and going places.
