Prepare to Soar: Here’s Your Pre-Flight Checklist

In leadership, just like in hang gliding, preparation is everything. To prepare to soar in my hang glider, I would study the weather conditions and then set up and carefully pre-check my wing. As a leader, you must study your business climate too. Anticipate the opportunities and obstacles you’ll face to prepare to soar and maximize your potential. Preparation is the foundation that allows you to confidently navigate challenges and seize the opportunities that others may miss. Here are five steps to help you prepare for soaring success:

• Sharpen Your Vision: Where are you headed, and why? Define your goals clearly so every decision aligns with your ultimate destination.
• Stay Current on Basic Skills: Like a glider pilot needs to maintain her take-off and landing skills, your leadership relies on key competencies. Identify areas to improve and commit to honing them.
• Anticipate Turbulence: What obstacles might you encounter? Preparing for challenges makes them easier to navigate when they arise.
• Build a Solid Support Team: Surround yourself with capable and motivated individuals who share your vision and can help you achieve it.
• Embrace Continuous Learning: The best leaders are always learning. Stay curious, seek out mentors, and keep your knowledge current.

It takes effort and intentionality to prepare to soar, but the reward is worth it. When you’re ready to catch the lift, you’ll find that even in turbulence, there’s an opportunity to rise higher than ever before.
