5 Ways to Lead Like We’re All on the Same Plane

lead like we're all on the same plane

You and your team might have different roles, backgrounds, and levels of experience—but it’s important to lead like we’re all on the same plane. You’re flying together toward a shared destination, navigating turbulence, shifting winds, and the occasional storm.

Onboard, each person plays a critical role—some as pilots charting the course, others as crew ensuring stability, and still others as passengers bringing their goals, energy, and perspective.

When you, as the leader, recognize that everyone is part of the same journey, it becomes easier to foster trust, communicate clearly, and adjust to whatever airspace you’re moving through. And just like a hang glider pilot depends on finding lift in turbulent air to rise higher, you depend on finding and leveraging the collective lift of your team.

How do you lead like you’re all on the same leadership plane?

Check Your Instruments! Even pilots can get disoriented if they rely only on what they feel. Good leaders use data and dialogue.

  • Are your team’s goals clearly defined and visible?
  • Are you checking your communication gauges regularly?

Communicate Like It’s a Cockpit. In flight, everyone hears the same information at the same time.

  • Use brief, honest updates to build trust and maintain alignment.
  • Acknowledge issues early—turbulence doesn’t get better if you ignore it.

Level the Cabin. Hierarchy may be necessary, but dignity must be universal.

  • Show your team that every voice matters.
  • Encourage everyone to call out issues or opportunities—like a co-pilot would.

Scan for Lift. Conditions shift. Good pilots scan for lift—so must good leaders.

  • Watch for what’s working, not just what’s broken.
  • Ask: “Where are we catching lift right now, and how can we ride it higher?”

Know When to Adjust Course. Being on the same leadership plane doesn’t mean staying on the same flight path forever.

  • Revisit the mission and be willing to pivot.
  • Leadership isn’t about controlling the air—it’s about responding to it with skill and grace.

Leadership is a shared flight.
