Have you ever looked at a project and wondered, “Why haven’t we finished this yet?” Perhaps it seemed urgent six months ago. Everyone agreed it mattered. Yet somehow it keeps slipping to next week…then next month.
The truth is, stalled business priorities are rarely caused by a lack of talent or commitment. More often, capable leaders become stretched too thin. New demands arrive, emergencies interrupt, and before long yesterday’s priority quietly moves to the back burner.
Before You Push Harder, Ask These Three Questions
Rather than assuming your team simply needs to work harder, pause long enough to pressure-test the priority itself.
- Is this still one of our most important priorities?
Circumstances change. Markets shift. New opportunities emerge. Sometimes we continue pursuing something simply because we’ve already invested time in it. Confirm that the destination is still worth the flight. - What’s actually preventing progress?
Is it a lack of resources? Competing priorities? An unclear owner? Decision bottlenecks? Until you identify the real obstacle, adding more meetings or more effort rarely solves the problem. - If this truly matters, what leadership capacity does it need?
This question is often overlooked. Most organizations don’t lack capable leaders—they lack the time and bandwidth to give important initiatives the attention they deserve. Sometimes momentum returns simply because someone can step in, provide focus, coordinate the effort, and keep it moving. The answers to these questions often reveal that the priority wasn’t flawed at all. It simply lacked enough leadership attention to carry it forward.
Every hang glider pilot knows you can’t force the air to lift you. You have to recognize where the lift already exists and position yourself to take advantage of it. Organizations aren’t much different. Momentum returns when leaders identify where their attention will create the greatest lift.
If you find that important initiatives continue to stall despite having a talented team, it may be worth stepping back before pushing harder. Sometimes an outside perspective helps clarify what’s really holding things back and identifies the next practical steps for moving forward. You haven’t peaked yet!
